DC’s Shazam! has cast actor Djimon Hounsou as the 3,000-year-old Wizard who gives 14-year-old boy named Billy Batson the powers of six ancient heroes, according to Entertainment Weekly. The filming for the movie had already wrapped back in May so the news of what actor would play the film’s Wizard was a tightly-kept secret until now.
The Beninese actor made a name for himself with movies like Gladiator and Blood Diamond. Recently, he played Korath the Pursuer in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, a role he will reprise next year in Captain Marvel. With the recent news of his DC role, it looks like Hounsou will be playing both sides of the Marvel and DC cinematic rivalry.
The news may come as a shock to many fans following the production of the movie. It was initially reported that actor Ron Cephas Jones, known for roles in This Is Us and Luke Cage, would be playing the magical Wizard. But according to Syfy Wire, there was a scheduling conflict that kept Jones away from the role. Not a lot has been seen from the film many fans are expecting new information to come to light during San Diego Comic-Con next week.
Shazam! will be DC’s seventh installment in the DC Extended Universe and is set to premiere April 5th, 2019.
