We now have our first look at Black Manta in Aquaman, the aquatic superhero’s solo film that will be hitting theaters this Winter.
The picture shows the mercenary/pirate David Kane as he works on a prototype of his infamous plasma beam shooting helmet. Kane is set to be played by Yahya Abdul-MAteen II (of Netflix’s The Get Down) but I’ve gotta say the helmet here looks spectacular albeit a little bit smaller than some of the other incarnations.
The production of Aquaman was held very tight to the chest which caused some concern considering the film is only 6 months out and this is really the first big news we’re getting about it. Director James Wan apparently did that on purpose.
“He’s part mercenary but full-time pirate who in his suit will look like some crazy alien from outer space,” Wan said. “Black Manta is a really interesting character who is somehow factored into this story but our main story is about (Jason Momoa) and (Patrick Wilson).”
Momoa and Wilson are playing Arthur Curry, aka the titular hero Aquaman, and Orm, aka the villainous Ocean Master, respectively. The characters are brothers who become locked in a struggle for the throne. Arthur, raised on the surface, returns to Atlantis in an effort to stop Orm from waging war against the surface world.
Aquaman coasts into theaters on December 21, 2018. Make sure you return to Hybrid Network for more DC movie updates and other pop culture news.
