The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel villain has been confirmed, and he can be summed up in just two words: smoke and mirrors. That’s right, according to multiple sources, one of Spidey’s most iconic villains Mysterio will be the big bad this time around, and he’ll be played by none other than Jake Gyllenhaal.
But we won’t just be seeing Mysterio. According to a follow-up report from Variety, we can expect the first film’s villain, Vulture, to appear once again with Michael Keaton reprising his role, potentially a set-up for the villainous team Sinister Six to appear down the road.
It’s worth noting that Gyllenhaal is just in talks at this point, but the casting would be a huge one. According to previous reports, Matt Damon had been in talks for the villain role, which many thought could be Mysterio. If that’s the case, it seems like Marvel and Sony are going for a familiar face for the character.
There’s probably a specific reason behind that. In the comics, Mysterio, aka Quentin Beck, was a Hollywood special effects expert and stunt man, who always dreamed of becoming an actor himself. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the talent, and so he turned to taking down Spider-Man to make himself famous. In casting a well-known actor, Marvel can take advantage of some heavy irony.
